Psychotherapy refers to a communicative setup in which the counselor/ therapist facilitates the client’s exploration of his/her mind, and situations perceived as problems and find a solution for the same.
Through a psychotherapy session, the client starts gaining insight into his/ her own mental processes. It is achieved through a collaborative exploration by the client and therapist, which is directed by the questioning and reflections by the counselor/ psychotherapist and subsequent responses to them by the client.
A counseling/ Psychotherapy session usually lasts for 45 minutes to an hour, however, the duration of the session may vary depending on the client, his/ her condition, and the therapy employed. How many sessions of therapy will I have to take? The sessions required differs on a case to case basis. It depends on numerous factors such as the therapy employed, the condition of the client, the severity of her/his condition, the goals to be achieved, etc. Some therapeutic approaches in combination with some clients may intervene within a day, while some therapeutic approaches with some clients may work for years. In case of CBT therapy, for instance, it is usually conducted across 5 to 20 sessions, where every session lasts for around 45 to 60 minutes and is scheduled every 3 to 7 days.
Standard psychotherapy sessions are scheduled once, or twice weekly. It changes based on the severity of the case and the demand of the client. The client (or the client’s parent, for a minor) and the therapist decide it mutually. How many sessions does it take to heal completely? Dealing with trauma is not like dealing with a disease. Therapy is not about getting cured, but more about reviving the functionality that would have been if the trauma would not have occurred in life.
